My beta, Blue Ray, lives in a small tank on my desk at work. He’s the only fish in the tank but doesn’t really seem to care. About a week ago, I noticed bubbles in the tank that were all bunched up in one area. I figured it was just stray bubbles from the filter collecting on the side of the tank. Then I saw Blue swim under the bubbles and nudge them with his nose. So I watched him a little longer and found out that HE has actually been making bubble nests. I had to look up information about betas to see if this behavior was odd. Turns out, the male betas build the nest, collect the eggs from the females after mating and insert them into the nest. They then guard the nest until the babies hatch. So, I snapped a video of him tending his bubbles. Soon, I’ll be getting him a mate and see just how far this can go.
I’ve done a lot of weird stuff when it comes to animals, I guess. I’ve hand fed a praying mantis. Played hide and seek with a hairless rat. Even gotten “attacked” by a jumping spider that I was filming a little too closely. But now, I have something to add to my list that I never imagined. I’ve been hand watering the roaches that I raise as food for my lizards. Yup. You read that correctly. I actually get water in a little dropper and give it to them one by one. I’m intrigued at the fact that they seem to remember what I’m doing and will actually grab the dropper to steady it so that they can drink more easily. Now don’t get me wrong. I won’t be snuggling up on the coach with them to watch some TV. But I find it fascinating that a creature so quickly despised by most people can exhibit behavior that is so opposite of what you would expect. They truly are incredible little machines once you pay attention to them.
Just got home from seeing Tron Legacy with the wife. The short review would be that it was a good movie but a bad sequel. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics were great and the action was good. But, being a big fan of the original, I felt kind of slighted by the story. Especially after having to wait 20+ years for it. My other gripe would be paying $12.50 to see a 3D movie and having the first message on the screen be that a lot of scenes in the movie are 2D and were shot that way on purpose. Whatever. I reiterate, good movie. Bad sequel.
The wife and I made it to the reptile show held recently in town. We usually go to every show if for no other reason then to look at all of the cool reptiles and amphibians. The nice thing about these shows as compared to the show a Wesselmans Nature Preserve is that you can buy at these shows. So if you see a Panther Chameleon that you just GOTTA have, you can buy him right there from breeders and people with the same interests as you. While I was mainly on the lookout for an Egyptian tortoise, I got pulled into the newest feeder bug situation. It seems these orange spot roaches are the perfect low maintenance feeder bug. So I bought a colony for $10 which contained about 25 roaches of different ages. I definitely have a mature breeding mail and female. Given a week or 2, my play is to have a completely established colony setup to always have available feeders for our lizards. So, I’ll leave you with a few pictures of the critters taken last night when we were feeding them.
Alright. The Kinect is officially fun as hell. Emily and I just spent an hour playing Dance Central and had a blast! I am by no means a dancer, but I still have fun playing these kinds of games and the Kinect does an amazing job of tracking your movements and syncing to the music. I’d have to say it’s the best game console video camera technology I’ve ever seen. Emily is using The Biggest Loser right now and it’s unreal how it’s displaying her character on the screen. It even just called her out for not stepping the way she should for the exercise she was doing. The the trainer asked her how she was doing and listened for her response. I can’t wait to see how this tech evolves as the next round of games come out.
Hope this works…

I tried yesterday and today to find a store in town that had the new Microsoft Kinnect sensor in stock. No luck. All I could find was the $299 bundle that had the Xbox slim and the Kinnect together. This afternoon, however, I get a call from my awesome wife telling me that she just picked up a Kinnect for me! Turns out Best Buy must have gotten a shipment on today AFTER I called them. They also gave her a free Kinnect carry bag and water bottle. This is like the third time that Emily has come through in the video game department. She waited in line to get my original Xbox system, bought me my first Playstation and favorite game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and also helped in getting a Nintendo Wii. Now if I could just get her to PLAY the games with me…
Halloween seems to bring out the creative side of me and Emily. Whether it’s making our costumes or carving pumpkins, there’s just something fun about making scary things. So, I thought I would post a few pics of some of the things we’ve done so far for Halloween 2010.
This is the Nerf gun that Emily “steampunked” as an accessory to her Halloween costume. Who knew a little paint, gears and tubing would make a bright yellow Nerf dart gun look like a bad ass Blade Runner meets Bioshock weapon? There will be a couple more to come as we finish them up.
Here’s the pumpkin I just finished carving. It didn’t turn out near as well as Emily’s gun, but I still like it. In case you couldn’t tell, it’s a ghoul screaming. ![]()
Emily carved this one last night. She’s a big fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, so a Jack Skelington pumpkin was a perfect fit. Another cool thing about this one, it’s a fake foam pumpkin so we can set it out year after year.
That’s a few of the things we’ve gotten done so far. There should be some more in the next week so check back, if you want to.
